Measures for the incoming year which are intended to strengthen the position of Jewry in world affairs and stem the tide of anti-Semitism were proposed here today by leaders engaged in a symposium on “The Major Responsibility of the American Jewish Community in 5694”.
The Rev. Dr. A. M. Hershman, rabbi of Congregation Shaarey Zedek; Milton M. Alexander, prominent local civic leader; William B. Isenberg, president of the Zionist Organization of Detroit and Rabbi Leon Fram, of Temple El, issued statements the substance of which is that the Jewish people take steps to defend themselves against the growth of anti-Semitism. Dr. Hershman’s proposals stress the need for widespread Jewish education, the upbuilding of Palestine, “the maintenance of Jewish sanctities”, an “immediate and serious attempt to cope with the tragic situation of the Jews in Germany” and the strengthening of Jewish philanthropic institutions.
