Recent symptoms for Jews in Morocco are not encouraging, and there are reports of renewed anti-Jewish press propaganda and the continued imprisonment of 42 Jews alleged to be implicated in an emigration group. Board of Deputies president Sir Barnett Janner told the Board today.
The Board president stressed that, in view of the threats by Moroccan ministers against mass emigration, issued shortly after the late King Mohammed’s interview with local Jewish leaders, “it appears more advisable to issue a more sober and realistic statement as a corrective to the over-optimism of some Jewish pronouncements.”
He said it was still too early to assess the effects of the untimely death of King Mohammed and the accession of King Hassan II, but underlined that “it is highly important to be known that the Jewish community in Britain was watching closely developments in Morocco to insure that the position of Jews there should not be impaired.”
