In an impressive ceremony reminiscent of medieval times, the temporary synagogue which has been erected on the site of the Great Synagogue of London, destroyed by Nazi bombs during the “blitz,” was consecrated today.
The synagogue was formally opened by Sir Samuel Joseph, Jewish Lord Mayor of London, who was accompanied by his sheriffs, mace-bearers, chaplains attached to the Jewish units of the Royal Fusileers and other dignitaries. Chief Rabbi Joseph Hertz delivered a sermon after which the scrolls of the Torah were carried to the Holy Ark and an eternal lamp which had stood in the ancient synagogue at Hamburg was kindled. Among the guests attending the ceremony were Jewish chaplains attached to the American and Canadian forces in Britain.
