Leaders of the Jewish, Catholic and Protestant faiths today issued special statements honoring labor in connection with the national observance of Labor Day next Monday. The statements were in the names of the National Council of Churches (Protestant) National Catholic Welfare Conference and the Synagogue Council of America, the coordinating agency for the Orthodox, Conservative and Reform Jewish congregations in the United States.
Rabbi Max Davidson, president of the Synagogue Council, declared in his message that the theme of Labor Day this year is “the right of every man and woman to work in peace and dignity without discrimination or distinction based on race, religion, color, ancestry or national origin.” Rabbi Davidson pointed out that the Talmud had stated: “Great is labor, for it does honor to him who is occupied by it.”
