The Synagogue Council of America, representing Orthodox, Conservative and Reform dongregations and rabbis of America, today announced that it “views with alarm” the proposed Edwards calendar.

Rabbi Herbert S. Goldstein, president, stated that the Council is “opposed to the proposed new calendar because it sacrifices precious spirtual values for insufficient material gain. The Edwards plan would make the Sabbath, for Jews and Christians, a traveling day, One year it would be Saturday or Sunday – another Monday or Tuesday – and so on. This attempt to change the calendar, whereby the holy Sabbath would be moved from one day to another, was made at the close of the last war and was defeated by the league of Nations.”
