A Syrian military spokesman today charged Israel with armed aggression, alleging that Israeli troops occupied the Syrian village of Al Tawafik in the frontier zone in defiance of the United Nations Armistice agreement, a cable from Damascus reported.
A cable from Beirut, Lebanon, said a battle had erupted on the Lebanese-Syrian frontier today when an armed Syrian force clashed with a Lebanese patrol. Violent fighting ensued with early reports telling of at least 12 dead and many wounded. It is the most serious clash yet recorded on the tense frontier.
