Syria today requested an urgent meeting of the Security Council “to discuss the decision of the Israeli government to apply Israeli law to the occupied Golan Heights.” The request was made in a letter from the Syrian Ambassador to the UN, Dia-Allah El-Fattal, to the President of the Security Council, Olatia Opunnu of Uganda. Informal consultations between Security Council members are scheduled to begin by this evening. Meanwhile, a spokesman for Secretary General Kurt Waldheim said today that the Secretary General has expressed concern over the reported Israeli move.
