Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa is poised to become prime minister, a leading Arabic-language daily reported over the weekend. Observers believe that the shake-up, which would create a new Cabinet, is designed to ease the path of succession for Bashar Assad, the son of ailing President Hafez Assad, and to facilitate negotiations with Israel by elevating Sharaa to a post equivalent to that held by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak.
