A Syrian naval vessel today intercepted and held up an Israeli fishing boat on the high seas outside Syrian territorial waters, while the fishing boat was on the way home from Turkey. Israel immediately protested “this act of piracy” to the Israel-Syrian Mixed Armistice Commission, demanding that the boat and crew be returned at once.
According to the Israeli Army spokesman, the fishing boat “Nachman,” belonging to the Nachshon Company, was stopped at sea by the Syrian naval vessel which forced the captain of the Israeli boat to board the Syrian ship. The crew of the “Nachman” was then ordered to follow the Syrian ship into the Syrian port of Lattaquia. The “Nachman” crew reported to Israel by radio when the “Nachman” was still seven miles outside Lattaquia. In addition to the captain, the crew of the “Nachman” consists of six men.
