The talks between Israel and Egypt on the disputed Taba territory are scheduled to resume this week, it was learned here over the weekend. If these talks prove fruitful, a summit meeting between Premier Shimon Peres and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak could very well take place next month, according to Abdul Hani Kandil, Egypt’s Oil Minister, who concluded his two-day visit last Thursday. He expressed optimism about the outcome of the Taba talks and said these could pave the way for the summit.

According to a timetable suggested by Kandil, a delegation of senior Israeli officials will go to Cairo this week for the beginning of the talks and next week they will be held in Israel. The Cairo-bound delegation will be led by Avraham Tamir, Director General of the Prime Minister’s Office. Israeli Energy Minister Moshe Shahal will pay a return visit to Egypt the third week of December.
