Israel Ambassador Abba Eban today spent about an hour in discussion with Under-Secretary of State Walter Bedell Smith, continuing a series of top-level discussions pertaining to the Israeli implications of the British withdrawal from the Suez Canal zone.
Mr. Eban, who met yesterday with Secretary of State Dulles, will see Mr. Dulles again before the end of the week. The Ambassador made no specific report to the press today, saying that he preferred to wait until the current series of talks are completed, presumably by the end of this week.
There was speculation in diplomatic circles here that Mr. Eban is being consulted by the State Department on a reported offer by Egyptian Premier Gamal Abdel Nasser that Egypt might agree to have the United States act as mediator in an effort to resolve Israel-Arab differences. This arose from a published interview in which Premier Nasser indicated that Egypt wants peace with Israel in the wake of the Suez settlement.
