Like their bearded ancestors in the ancient days of the Old Testament, four hundred students at the Hebrew Theological Seminary in Chicago had to study in the evening by the light of tallow candles. All electricity was cut off by the Commonwealth Edison Company because of an unpaid $155.00 light bill. And due to the absence of Rabbi Saul Silber, who alone has the power to sign checks, no money could be found to meet the bill. The company refused the offer of another rabbi at the seminary to raise $50 as partial payment.
