The American Jewish Committee today congratulated the World Confederation of Organizations of the Teaching Profession, an organization of teachers from nearly 80 nations around the world, on its recent resolution calling for “the immediate abrogation” of the United Nations resolution of last November which equated Zionism with racism.
Bertram H. Gold, executive vice-president of the AJCommittee, said: “It is indeed heartening that this eloquent resolution passed without opposition and with only 16 abstentions. Every American must hope that the United Nations will understand the vital importance of this expression of concern by teachers throughout the world.”
The teachers’ resolution was passed during the 25th annual assembly of the World Confederation held last week at the Statler Hilton Hotel, in conjunction with the National Education Association. It expressed the assembly’s “indignation” at the UN statement which, it said, “in formulating a definition of Zionism, equated the struggle of the Jewish people for the respect of their rights as a nation to a form of racism, risking thereby an aggravation of the situation in the Middle East and justifying the continuation of the conflict.”
