In wartime it is necessary to “put major stress on those human and cultural interests that are distinctive in a democracy and essential to all America,” in order to combat the racial antagonism that is being reflected in schoolrooms throughout America as a result of the Nazi racial philosophy, it was stated yesterday by Dr. Stewart Cole, director of the Bureau of Intercultural education.
Speaking at a conference on elementary schools in wartime, at Teachers College of Columbia University, Dr. Cole said that one of the major tasks of teachers today is to combat this philosophy of bigotry.
