The ports of Jaffa and Tel Aviv were quiet yesterday as dock workers began a stoppage in support of their demands for higher wages, an eight-hour day and no overtime work.
The Histadrut, meanwhile, decided to appoint a three-man committee to study the situation, in effect rejecting the workers’ uncompromising attitude. The local dock workers have threatened to disrupt operations in the port of Haifa, Israel’s chief seaport, unless the Haifa dock workers support them.
