Israel Rokeach, vice-Mayor of Tel Aviv, condemned what he described as an attempt to nullify the Jewish character of the police force in the only all-Jewish city in the world. The Tel Aviv police department, he said, must remain essentially Jewish in personnel.
The fact that Jewish policemen are leaving the Tel Aviv force because of the low pay has been viewed here with grave concern. British policemen are replacing them, and gradually the force is losing its Jewish character.
