B1 Al Israel Air-line officials announced today the start of midnight flights between here and New York City. The new flights, to continue through the summer, will give passengers an extra day at their destinations. Planes leaving here at midnight will reach Kennedy Airport at 8 a.m. New York time. Return flights, leaving Kennedy in the afternoon, will land here at 6 a.m.
Moshe Carmel, El Al chairman, and Mordechai Ben-Ari, El Al general director, also reported that the airline’s net profits for the 1971-72 fiscal year were IL 114,000 ($27,142), compared with IL 1.11 million ($266,907) the prior year. They said they considered this an achievement, in view of losses suffered by most other airlines. They also reported an ever-increasing demand for seats that last year compelled El Al to direct thousands of passengers to foreign carriers, resulting in a drop of its own share of Lydda-bound air traffic from 50 to 40 percent.
They also reported the airline was engaged in a three-year expansion program involving purchase of three more jumbo jets beyond the two now in service which they said have been very successful. They said the increase in tourism gave the company hope the introduction of the additional planes would be economically feasible.
