Mayor Israel Rokach of Tel Aviv today submitted to District Commissioner Robert Crosbie the plea of Jews inhabiting the neighboring district in the predominantly Arab city of Jaffa for annexation of the Jewish area to Tel Aviv. Mr. Crosbie replied that the matter could not be taken up pending the completion of the inquiry of Britain’s Palestine Partition Commission.
As disorders continued in the boundary section, the area in which a twelve-hour curfew had been imposed was enlarged. District Commissioner Crosbie approved the arming of drivers of Red Mogen David ambulances traversing the terror-bound border streets to pick up casualties.
The principal Palestinian celebration of Hagigas Hatorah (marking the simultaneous world-wide completion of the reading of the Talmud), scheduled to be held in Tel Aviv’s Gan Meir park, was postponed to August 28 because of the tension.
Meanwhile, troops occupied Tulkarem and imposed a 24-hour curfew because of the refusal of local Arabs to end a general strike. Two Arabs who violated the curfew were fired upon and seriously wounded.
