Rabbis Yedidya Fraenkel and Haim David Halevi were installed last night as Tel Aviv’s new chief rabbis in ceremonies at the Mann Auditorium. The ritual included the sounding of shofars by Yemenite rabbis and the playing of Hasidic music by a police band. Rabbi Fraenkel was given a long black gown and Rabbi Halevi received the gown and the traditional Sephardic headdress.
Chief Rabbis Shloma Goren and Joseph Ovadia, both chief rabbis of Tel Aviv before their election to the Israel Chief Rabbinate last year, attended the ceremonies.
A youth orchestra from Dimona, Israel, is to visit the German-town of Andernach, in Aug, as part of both towns continuing effort to strengthen provisional friendship links between them. In May, a municipal delegation from the Rhenish town visited Dimona and this month delegations of young Conservatives and young Socialists plan to follow suit.
