Organized by a group of German Jewish immigrants in 1848–eight years after the first Jews began to arrive in this city–Temple Brith Kodesh is now the city’s leading Reform congregation. The temple’s present building was erected in 1893. Rabbi Philip S. Bernstein, a native of Rochester, has served as spiritual leader of the congregation since 1926 and was Jewish advisor to the U.S. Command in Europe.
