Temple Sinai was one of several north shore buildings defaced with painted slogans including “Smash Zionism,” “Free Palestine,” “Support El Fatah” and “Nasser Lives.” Other slogans endorsed the Black Panther leader Bobby G. Seale and Huey P. Newton, a Vietcong victory in Vietnam and Women’s Liberation. Frank Paulus, police chief of Fox Point village, and David Meltzer, president of Congregation Sinai, agreed that the range of subject matter and the diversity of the buildings indicated the defacing were not basically anti-Semitic. Mr. Meltzer attributed the slogans to chronic protesters, not necessarily anti-Semites. The establishments involved have both Jewish and non-Jewish owners. The police promised a thorough investigation.
