More than 600 persons, including delegates from 10 Latin American countries, attended the opening sessions of the fifth Latin American convention of B’nai B’rith, Jewish fraternal order. Federal state, municipal and religious leaders, as well as the heads of the local Jewish community, were present at the opening session to welcome the delegates and their guests.
A feature of the opening session was presentation of the Human Rights Medal to Dr. Julio de Mesquita Filho, editor of the newspaper O Estado do Sao Paulo, and president of the Inter-American Press Association.
Before commencement of the working sessions, the delegates were received by Dom Agneli Cardinal Rossi, Archbishop of Malines-Brussels. Cardinal Rossi. welcoming the B’nai B’rith representatives, lauded the atmosphere of brotherhood in Brazil. The convention will continue through Sunday.
