“American Jewish Tercentenary Season” has been proclaimed in the State of Tennessee by Frank G. Clement, Governor, in a proclamation issued here at the conclusion of a ceremony at the State Capitol celebrating the 300th anniversary of Jewish settlement in America. The “season” will run from October, 1953, through May, 1955.
In an address delivered before he read the proclamation, Gov. Clement noted the contributions of Jews to American Ideals of freedom and justice and stressed the role of religion in the development of this country. He also stressed that “one of the compelling reasons” for Jews to come to this country three centuries ago “was to escape from the night of tyranny into the light of liberty that appeared on the horizon in the West.”
