One day after a disaster was averted at the Carmel market here, when a bomb was discovered on top of a vendor’s cart and dismantled before it could explode, an army spokesman announced today that an Arab terrorist gang had been uncovered in Nablus. The gang was responsible for planting two lethal bombs in the Carmel market two years ago and last year which caused fatalities and scares of injuries to shoppers.
According to reliable sources, the man who placed the bombs is among those the security forces rounded up in Nablus. The terrorist cell there is part of the El Fatah, it was reported. The first bomb, in August 1978, killed one person and injured 50. The second bomb, in April 1979, killed two persons and injured 29.
Meanwhile, the Carmel market was back to normal today and the hero there was a 14-year-old boy from Gaza who detected the suspicious-looking object on top of the vendor’s cart yesterday. Owners of the fruit and vegetable stands in the market collected IL 10,000 among themselves and gave it to the youth as their taken of appreciation.
In another near tragedy, a bomb exploded today at a bus stop near a busy intersection outside Kiryat Malachi near-Ashdod. Police said there were no injuries and no damages.
