United Nations Secretary-General U Thant has sent one of his top aides to Algiers, possibly to seek release of the hijacked El Al airliner held there since July 23, it was reported here today.
The emissary is Undersecretary-General Jose Rolz-Bennett of Guatemala, who left for Algiers last Friday with a written message from Mr. Thant to President Houari Boumedienne. Mr. Rolz-Bennett is still in Algiers, sources here said.
UN sources would neither deny nor confirm the report of Mr. Rolz-Bennett’s visit. It has been rumored here that the $6 million plane, hijacked by Arab terrorists, is to be released soon, and the 12 Israeli passengers and crewmen shortly thereafter.
