The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments in a case brought by a Seventh-Day Adventist against an employer who refused to accommodate her religious needs. Lisette Balint, a resident of Carson City, Nev., was offered a position with the city’s sheriff’s department, but the department refused to excuse her from working on the Sabbath. A district court previously ruled against Balint, stating that accommodating her would constitute an “undue hardship” for the employer. Jewish groups filed friend-of-the-court briefs supporting her appeal.
