The Amsterdam daily Handelsbladet reported that West German Foreign Minister Walter Scheel expressed the hope yesterday that Netherlands authorities will act on “humanitarian grounds” to pardon the ex-Nazis. Scheel made the remark as the Nethlands Royal Family began a State visit to West Germany. He said, however, that the Federal government would not raise the question with the Queen during her tour. He stressed that Netherlands Foreign Minister Norbert Schmelzer, would not discuss the issue with him but contended that many prominent West German personalities who had suffered under the Nazis supported clemency for the prisoners.
