The assertion that, contrary to promises, the Roumanian Government has not paid a single penny compensation to the victims of the devastations in Ordeamare and Cluj, is made by the Roumanian newspaper “Dimineatza.”
When the world press published numerous telegrams concerning the devastations and when foreign correspondents came to Oradeamare by aeroplane, the Government declared that it would compensate all of the victims, the paper writes. There was even talk about eighty million lei being allocated for this purpose and the anti-Semitic press has since been conducting a vigorous agitation on the ground that the Jews received eighty million lei. The fact is that not a single penny was given to the Jewish victims. Five million lei were given for rebuilding the devastated synagogue and compensation was given to a few foreign subjects, but to no one else. Premier Vintila Bratianu, who is also Minister of Finance, is putting such formalities and obstacls in the way that it seems no compensation will ever be obtained.
The only hope lies in the expected return of Foreign Minister Titulescu who is now abroad, the paper states. Upon his return Titulescu may prevail upon the Premier by explaining to him the feeling abroad. Besides, Minister Titulescu assumed certain definite obligations in this regard, the paper adds.
