The chairman of the Democratic National Committee stepped down, citing the desire to spend more time with his ailing father and 9-year-old son. Steve Grossman, a longtime Jewish activist who resigned as chairman of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee to run the Democratic Party, had planned to stay in the job through the 2000 presidential campaign.
