The chairman of the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee plans hearings about the CIA’s role as monitor of Palestinian compliance with the specific security steps spelled out in the latest Israeli-Palestinian accord. Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) said he was troubled by the agreement because it gives the usually clandestine agency a “visible role” in Middle East peacekeeping. U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright defended the agency’s role, saying it has long worked to prevent terror in the region.
