The Chief Rabbi of Denmark, Bent Melchior, began Friday a series of meetings with Israeli rabbis on the controversy over conversions performed by the Copenhagen Beth Dis. Criticism that the conversions do not fully conform with halachic demands have been raised in a number of quarters. Rabbi Melchior arrived here with a group of Danish visitors ostensibly on a routine tour, but it appeared that his main purpose was to convince Israel’s rabbis that the Danish conversions are satisfactory from an Orthodox point of view. If they are not, converts migrating to Israel could run into difficulties concerning their personal status.
