The chief rabbi of Latvia opposes bringing an alleged war criminal to trial, according to the Union of Councils for Soviet Jews. Natan Barkans, who was recently awarded Latvia’s highest civilian honor, said trying Konrad Kalejs would fan anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial in the Baltic state. Latvian officials are considering whether to extradite Kalejs, who lives in Australia.
