The debate in the House of Lords on the Palestine situation which was expected to take place Tuesday afternoon has been postponed and Lord Islington’s questions have been passed over without any explanation.
Lord Islington, a pronounced opponent to Great Britain’s Palestine policy, is said to have been persuaded by Lord Walter Rothschild in a private conversation to agree to a postponement of the debate until Sir Herbert Samuel, the High Commissioner for Palestine, who arrived here last night, explained the situation more thoroughly, enabling the Government to make a statement to Parliament.
The Lords Rothschild, Swaythling and Bearsted were present in expectation apparently of the debate taking place as scheduled. This was Lord Rothschild’s first attendance in the House, although it is many years since he succeeded to the title, and it was therefore necessary for him to take the oath.
