The demand of the Roumanian students that the Jewish communities supply the clinics of the universities with Jewish corpses was in a way supported by the conference of university deans.

The conference decided to ask the Jewish communities to see to it that unclaimed corpses be turned over to the clinics.

Daniel Frohman was honored on Sunday when a testimonial dinner was given him at the Hotel Astor by the Theoria, an organization of women theatregoers. About 600 guests were present.

BREVITIES

The Tennessee Supreme Court on Saturday proclaimed the fundamental soundness of the State’s law against teaching the theory of evolution in State supported schools. At the same time it reversed the verdict of guilty against Prof. John T. Scopes, whose case was an appeal, and then barred recourse to the United States Court by recommending that the case be nolle prossed instead of re-tried.

Without a dissenting vote the Court recommended to L. D. Smith, State Attorney General, that the “peace and dignity” of the State would best be served by a nolle prosse, thus ending what the Court termed “this bizarre case,” once and for all.

Attorney General Albert Ottinger, the only Republican elected in the recent elections, was the guest of honor at a banquet in Hotel Commodore Sunday. He was presented with a diamond studded watch.

JEWISH COMMUNAL ACTIVITIES

A drive for $150,000 for the erection of a Jewish Community Centre in Staten Island was begun on Sunday. Ground was also broken on Sunday for the Hebrew School and Centre of Temple Emanu-El, the oldest and largest synagogue in Staten Island. Borough President Lynch, County Judge Tiernan and Municipal Court Justice Brown spoke at the ceremonies. The temple is located at Post and Heberton Avenue, Port Richmond.

At a dinner at the Stapleton Club the community centre drive was launched. Supreme Court Justice May was the guest of honor.

May Levy is President of the committee. The other officers are L. E. Sherman, Vice President; Samuel Angelevitz, Treasurer, and L. C. Sirkus, Secretary.
