The East German Heinrich Heine Prize has been awarded to Stephan Hermlin, author and lyricist, and Prof. Hans Kaufman, the literary scholar who has published Heine’s letters and books with commentaries. On Dec. 13, the West German Heinrich Heine Prize will be awarded to the Swiss author and playwright, Carl Zuckmeyer. The ceremony, which will take place in Dusseldorf where Heine was born, will be addressed by President Gustav Heinemann. Meanwhile, the controversy over renaming the university in Dusseldorf after Heine continues unabated. Until now the university authorities have refused to change the name.
