The European Union welcomed Knesset approval of Ariel Sharon’s withdrawal plan. “I congratulate the Israeli government and the Israeli Parliament on the vote yesterday in the Knesset, which is a historic move which could enhance hopes for the peace Israelis and Palestinians deserve,” the E.U.’s foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, said Wednesday. But he reiterated European Union discomfort at the prospect of Israel keeping portions of West Bank land under the Israeli prime minister’s plan to quit the Gaza Strip.
