The far-right Republican Party failed to reach the 5 percent threshold necessary for representation in the Czech Republic’s Parliament. The party, which is anti-Semitic, anti-Gypsy and opposes the Czech Republic’s joining NATO, polled only 3.9 percent, down from 8 percent in the 1996 elections. The left-of-center Social Democrats won the largest number of seats and are expected to form a coalition with the centrist Christian Democrats, who are strong supporters of restitution of Jewish property.
