The French government will fund a five-year plan to protect Jewish and Christian cemeteries in Algeria, President Jacques Chirac announced. Chirac made the announcement Monday during a historic tour of the former French colony that was widely seen as an attempt to reconcile a relationship that often has been chilly since Algeria became independent in 1962.
