The head of the Southern Baptist Convention defended his group’s call to followers to pray for the conversion of Jews during the High Holidays. Responding to a letter from the national director of the Anti-Defamation League, Rev. Paige Patterson insisted on “absolute religious liberty” for both Jews and Baptists. In a second letter to Patterson this week, ADL director Abraham Foxman denounced as “theological arrogance” Patterson’s insistence on the right to seek Jewish converts.
