TRIBUTES TO MARSHALL UNABATED

Tributes to the memory of Louis Marshall continue in an unabated stream, among them the following:

ALBERT D. LASKER

“The followers of the Jewish faith lost a great and useful co-religionist in the death of Louis Marshall, whose interest in the members of his sect was very compelling. The nation has lost a truly patriotic American and his myriad friends share their loss with the general public.”

LOUIS WILEY

“The passing of Louis Marshall has taken from the world a generous, humane philanthropist, a courageous and able champion of justice, an untiring leader of his co-religionists and a noble, lovable man. His death brings a feeling of deepest sorrow and irreparable personal loss. I grieve that this lofty and inspiring personality-my friend of forty years-has been removed and that his eminent services in law, in government and in social and religious activities have been stilled. The rich achievements of a life devoted unselfishly to others will stand always as a monument to the affectionate and grateful memory of our beloved friend and guide, Louis Marshall.”

CONGRESSMAN SAMUEL DICKSTEIN

“The news of the untimely death of Louis Marshall is a shock from which we cannot easily recover. It seems that there never was a time in the history of our Jews of the United States and in the world, when Louis Marshall’s name would not be heard whenever any matter affecting the welfare of our race came up to the foreground of public discussion.

“Louis Marshall was always the first Jew active as spokesman of his people whenever it became necessary to raise the voice of the Jew in a public cause. In my own experience as a member of the immigration committee of the House of Representatives, I frequently had occasion to come into contact with the enlightened, humane and philanthropic views which Louis Marshall so ably represented. Mr. Marshall’s clear-cut and intelligent view of our entire immigration problem was in a large measure responsible for the mitigation of the rigor which Congress saw fit to impose in our National Immigration Legislation.

“Louis Marshall’s death at this inopportune time will long be felt by our race and by the country at large. We have lost a sincere friend and champion, and the country one of its best constitutional lawyers.”

ISRAEL UNTERBERG, PRESIDENT OF THE JEWISH EDUCATION ASSOCIATION

“As leader of American Jewry. Louis Marshall was more than a great statesman and wise counsellor. He was also a genuine lover of his people. Everything he did and said was shot through quality of love. He was no mere palliator. He looked far ahead and saw more deeply than other men. It was this power of vision that made him so profoundly devoted to the cause of Jewish education, which among the many causes receiving his devotion, was always nearest to his heart. He saw in Jewish education the perpetuation of Jewish life in America. We, of the Jewish Education Association, always found him a ready helper and an inspiration. We therefore have particular reason to mourn the great loss that has befallen our community.”

BERNARD S. DEUTSCH, PRESIDENT AMERICAN JEWISH CONGRESS

“This is indeed a sad time for Israel! Coming as it does immediately succeeding the brutal outrages in Palestine, the death of Louis Marshall adds another grief to American Jewry.

“No single Jew in America, in recent years, has been so vital a force in upholding Jewish ideal and in the protection of Jewish rights. American Israel mourns over his passing, but the inspiration of his memory and his life will ever be a source of stimulation to American Jews in their efforts toward the attainment of those Jewish ideals to which he dedicated his entire life and his heroic efforts.”

ALBERT H. LIEBERMAN, PHILADELPHIA

“What Mr. Marshall has done for the Jewish people the world over through his association with the American Jewish Committee and later with the Joint Distribution Committee and the United Jewish Campaign, now constitute a part of Jewish history. It was my privilege to be closely identified with him in the work of foreign relief. Despite his advanced age, he was ever ready to come to my assistance whenever I thought that his presence and his word would help us in our work. I recall distinctly the last time I asked him to address a regional conference for the United Jewish Campaign in Eastern Pennsylvania, at Harrisburg. The address he delivered on that occasion, not only stirred the five hundred delegates assembled from all parts of the state, but left a profound impression upon the Governor of Pennsylvania, who was then with us, and proved a great help to us in the work we have done since. There are many phases of Jewish activity where the counsel and the advice of Mr. Marshall will be missed. I know of none that will suffer more by his death than the work carried on by the Joint Distribution Committee and the United Jewish Campaign.

“A great leader in Israel has fallen. We mourn his loss.”

MIZRACHI ORGANIZATION OF AMERICA

“The Mizrachi Organization of America deeply grieves over the death of Louis Marshall, one of the greatest of Jewish leaders and champion of Orthodox Jewry in this century. Though not affiliated with organizations representing Orthodox Jewry, the profound sympathies of Louis Marshall for Orthodox Judaism were known to every Jew.

“Only a short time before his death, at the conference of the Jewish Agency in Zurich, did he manifest these sympathies. The spirit of Louis Marshall it was, that moved Jewry to unite for the upbuilding of the Jewish Homeland. The passing of Louis Marshall is an irretrievable loss to world Jewry.”

SAMUEL LAMPORT

“Louis Marshall combined willingness to render service with master ability to serve every great cause on which Americans or Jews embarked. It is certainly true that Louis Marshall cannot be replaced. In our generation he was unique in the great qualities that the Almighty endowed him with.”
