The Hungarian government has decided to finance the excavation of one of the world’s oldest synagogues. Experts estimate the synagogue may date back 700 years and say it is constructed in a special Oriental style found nowhere else in Europe. The synagogue ruins stand opposite another synagogue dating back to 1359 and both are found in the Hungarian town of Sopron in the west of Hungary. Sopron was the last stronghold of the Nazis and its Jewish population was exterminated. Only a few Jews live in Sopron now, those who returned from concentration camps.
