The International Committee of the Red Cross has “been in touch with the Alliance of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies of the USSR inquiring about the health and welfare of specific individuals, new being held in detention centers of the USSR.” This was disclosed in a letter by Samuel Krakow, International relations director of the American Red Cross, in a letter to Rabbi Gilbert I. Klaperman, chairman of the Greater New York Conference on Soviet Jewry. Krakow, responding to an inquiry by Rabbi Klaperman, added that “we are prepared to initiate health and welfare inquiries if such services are requested by a close relative of Individuals believed to be seriously ill and in situations where there has been difficulty in communications.”
