The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies approved a neutral symbol that paves the way for Israel to join the organization. The Jewish state’s Magen David Adom, which uses a red Star of David as its symbol, has been excluded from the international relief organization for nearly 60 years because of Arab opposition. After Syrian objections delayed an agreement for several days, compromise finally was reached late Wednesday on a red diamond symbol that Israeli ambulances may use in combat zones.
