The Israeli Navy boarded the Lebanon-bound freighter Nixos at sea last week and directed it to Haifa where 27 West German-made Unimog multi-purpose vehicles were unloaded and confiscated, it was announced there. The vehicles, manufactured by the Mercedes-Benz Co., are convertible to armored troop carriers of the type used by Palestinian terrorists. They were consigned to Chemed, registered in Beirut as an agency aiding Palestinian orphans but believed to be a cover for the acquisition of equipment by the PLO, Israeli officials said. The Nixos, which carried a crew of 10 and flew the flag of an unspecified Latin American country, was released after the vehicles were landed.
