The Israeli navy received the first of three Dolphin-class submarines built by Germany. The submarine was launched in 1996 and had been undergoing tests in Germany since then. Bonn financed two of the submarines as a gesture for Israel’s not retaliating against Iraqi Scud missile attacks during the 1991 Persian Gulf War. The second submarine is slated to be ready in two months, with the third to be delivered next year.
