The Jerusalem City Council has approved a master plan for the united city and its environs envisaging a population of one million in 14 years. The plan replaces one approved in 1959 which covered only the western portion of Jerusalem. According to the city fathers, Jerusalem’s population, which stands at 380,000 today, will reach 450,000 by 1982 and 530,000 by 1992. By then the population of Jerusalem, its suburbs and surrounding towns, such as Bethlehem will have a combined population of 1,000,000, double the present combined population.
