The Jewish Federation of St. Louis has sent $10,000 to the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee to aid in the general relief of famine in Ethiopia, it was an nounced by Israel Goldberg, Federation president. “We are joining hands with Catholic and Protestant world organizations to provide assistance to these victims of disaster,” he said.
The JDC has received permission to operate in the Gondar region where half a million people face starvation, Goldberg noted. Teams of volunteer doctors, nurses and nutritionists are being recruited to participate for three to six months in a program to upgrade clinics and health stations in Gondar. In addition, donations of food, clothing, medicines and blankets have been sent to Ethiopia and additional shipments are being organized.
