The laying of the cornerstone of the new $125,000 Temple Beth El was held in the presence of several hundred people. Attorney General Joseph Warner. Rabbi Irving Miller and George E. Gordon, president, were the principal speakers. Harry Cohen is the chairman of the building committee. The exercises were concluded with a dinner in the evening at which Mayor Lawrence F. Quigley was one of the principal speakers. The Temple will be completed before next September.
The new congregation was organized over a year ago when Rabbi Irving Miller of Youngstown, Ohio, received a call from the Chelsea Jewish community.
Justice Louis D. Brandeis of the United States Supreme Court arrived here from Washington to spend the summer in Massachusetts. Justice Brandeis called on Governor Frank G. Allen. This was his first visit to the Governor’s office in 14 years.
Henry Morgenthau, former United States Ambassador to Turkey, was the principal speaker at the valedictory dinner of the Near East Relief Committee held at the Hotel Statler. He sounded the keynote message when he declared America’s place in the future is to assume “the moral leadership of the world.” Appealing for aid in behalf of the unfortunate in the Near East, he said that if “we fail to held them it destroys their faith in God.”
