The League of Nations Secretariat is faced with legal difficulties in transmission to the Austrian authorities of a petition by the World Jewish Congress, it was revealed today. The difficulties arise from the fact that Austria, annexed by Germany, which is not a League member, has also ceased to become a League member. The legal section of the Secretariat is considering possible measures. The petition cites violation of the St. Germain Treaty’s clause guaranteeing respect for minorities’ rights and asks League intercession for Austria’s 200,000 Jews.
The executive committee of the World Jewish Congress issued a statement yesterday thanking the United States Government for its proposal to establish an international committee to facilitate emigration of political refugees and wishing the plan success.
