The Maltese government has without explanation ordered a local Libyan radio station to cease broadcasting. The cessation order came after local Maltese newspapers accused the station of anti-Israel and anti-Egyptian bias in its news bulletins. The station was authorized to begin transmission in 1975, but only added news bulletins to its usual fore of light music and Libyan cultural information in the past month as British troops left the island after a 170-year presence. Malta’s leftist Premier Dom Mintoff normally maintains good relations with Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi, who has promised extensive aid to the island to make up for the financial gap left by the British departure.
